Path to Purchase
Also known as: Purchase Path, Shopping Journey, Buyer Journey
Sequence of steps, touchpoints, and decisions a consumer goes through from recognizing a need to making a purchase.
The Path to Purchase is the sequential representation of all steps, touchpoints, and decision points a consumer goes through from recognizing a need to finally completing a purchase. It is a more operationally focused view than the Customer Journey, centered on the channel.
It includes: the need trigger, information search (online/offline), evaluation of alternatives, influence of recommendations and reviews, channel decision (online vs. physical store), and the moment of truth at the shelf or checkout.
Understanding the path to purchase allows optimizing brand presence at every touchpoint and maximizing conversion. It is especially critical for high-involvement categories (technology, automobiles, financial services) and for the retail sector.
