Semantic Differential
Also known as: Semantic Differential, Bipolar Scale, Profile Analysis
Attitude measurement technique using pairs of opposite adjectives to capture nuanced brand or concept perceptions.
The Semantic Differential is an attitude measurement technique developed by Charles Osgood that presents pairs of bipolar opposite adjectives (modern-old-fashioned, reliable-unreliable, expensive-affordable) on a 7-point scale, where the respondent marks their position between the two extremes.
It is primarily used to: measure brand image on multiple dimensions simultaneously, compare perception profiles between brands, and evaluate how a concept's positioning differs from existing brands.
Visualization of semantic differential profiles—where mean lines of multiple brands are plotted—immediately identifies how a brand does (or doesn't) differentiate from competitors on key image dimensions.
