Promotional Effectiveness

Also known as: Promo ROI, Promotional Lift, Promotion Effectiveness

Measurement of the impact of price and trade promotions on volume, profitability, and consumer behavior.

Promotional Effectiveness measures the real impact of promotional activities—price discounts, 2-for-1, special displays, coupons, sampling—on business indicators: incremental volume, incremental revenue, net profitability, and consumer behavior (trial, stockpiling, long-term loyalty impact).

A frequent pitfall is confusing the sales increase during a promotion with truly incremental sales: part of the additional volume may be stockpiling (advance buying that cannibalizes future sales) or temporary brand switching that doesn't generate loyalty.

Analytical tools for evaluating promotional effectiveness: time series analysis with adstocks, lift studies vs. store controls, and incrementality models. MMM is the most robust tool for estimating the net ROI of promotions.
